York Village

Picturesque York Village; is sometimes referred to as "Old York".

The town of York Maine is one of New England's earliest colonial settlements. It also has the distinction of being America's first chartered city (1641) and first incorporated city (1642).

York is the fourth name that the town has had. The town's first name was Agamenticus, named after the original inhabitants. It was then renamed to Gorgeana (pronounced "gorge-ee-anna") in 1642. The name York was appointed after the fall of the Loyalists under Cromwell in 1652, commemorating the town (York, England) in which Cromwell defeated the King's forces.

To learn more about "Old York" visit the many buildings maintained by the Old York Historical Society, including the Old Goal (Jail), where people love to have their picture taken in the stocks on the front lawn.
